West Jordan History

West Jordan was first settled in 1849, by pioneers spreading out from Salt Lake City into the rest of the valley. Its name comes from its location to the Jordan River and the fact that the pioneers thought it looked like the arid surroundings found in the country Jordan.

The nearby Jordan River, with the aid of irrigation trenches provided a much needed source of water so that crops could be grown. It also provided the power to drive the flour mills, that soon followed.

Just like South Jordan the population has seen from exponential growth, going from less than 2,000 in 1941 to 42,912 in 1990.
